Plot
A woman taking a cab from JFK engages in a conversation with the cab driver about the important relationships in their lives. They have an intense conversation
Recordings in Association with Levantine Music. Girlie (Dakota Johnson) arrives in New York at JFK and boards a yellow cab driven by Clark (Sean Penn). It’s one of those two. The actors are mostly alone in a confined space.
The audience discovers them as they go
Girlie is constantly texting someone and that person is almost the third character in the play. It’s a rich cinematic tradition with films like My Dinner with Andre. In some ways, it’s more engaging because they start out as strangers. There are ups and downs in the conversation, though one turn falters in my opinion.
Instead, he lets it float
She’s telling the story of her father and Clark doesn’t push it to the end. It’s a human instinct, but for drama, he has to push. There are obvious implications and he has to give them a voice. It’s also a point in the story where the tension has to keep building until the climax.
The script seems to be smarter than that
In the end, they never thought what I thought and that’s a little disappointing. Still, it’s a very engaging ride all the way to the end.
